An outstanding reference for any study of the ROTC Hunter's Guerrillas are books written by one of the earliest, and arguably most prominent, Filipino military historians, Colonel Uldarico S. Baclagon. This section is taken from his books Filipino Heroes of World War II, and Military History of the Philippines.

Conspicuous Galantry

The heroic actions of Col Emmanuel de Ocampo and Lt Col Frisco San Juan were but among the several acts of conspicuous gallantry performed by leaders of Hunters units. One leader who won distinction for excellent combat leadership was Lt. Simeon C. Medalla. Awarded the Bronze Star medal by the US Army, Lt Medalla was subsequently the recipient of the Military Merit Medal for "exemplary conduct in ground combat against the enemy during the Luzon Campaign in the Pacific Theater of Operations". As a combat leader, Lt Medalla displayed consicuous heroism and gallantry in the battle action narrated in the following citation for the Distinguished Conduct Star awarded to him:

"As a member of the 47th Infantry HUNTERS ROTC Guerrillas, Lt Medalla was entrusted on 18 May 1945 to lead a special force of highly selected men with a specific mission to assault and destroy an enemy stronghold which he himself reported. In the early morning of 21 May 1945, subject officer in complete disregard for his personal safety, executed his plan of attack without let-up that lasted approximately six (6) hours, ending in the complete and total decimation of the objective, costing the enemy a total count of forty (40) dead and the seizure of a considerable quantity of assorted high powered firearms and ammunition, with only four (4) wounded men on his side. By this feat achieved by Lt Medalla, the entire 47th Infantry, HUNTERS ROTC Guerrilla was able to resume its mission of mopping-up retreating enemy forces in the vast and extensive hillls of Cavite, Rizal, Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon provinces, thus enhancing considerably the liberation of the Philippines."
